I understand why the North Korean popular music in the south. I like some of them also. When Nick Bonner told me how catchy melodies are fun and I even had a bad taste. My musical taste is narrow, but I found while traveling in the north, the music is not bad. I knew I was in trouble when I recognized my favorites. Arirang is great, but many others are also good. It was addictive and now I check the videos on YouTube for a reminder.
